چکیده

S U M M A R Y Previous 2-D modelling of seismic waveforms and traveltimes has revealed a large-scale ridge-like velocity anomaly beneath Africa, which is usually referred to as the African superplume. The structure starts from the southern Indian Ocean and extends northwestwards into the Atlantic Ocean, with its base on the core–mantle boundary. The structure has relatively sharp lateral boundaries with the shear velocity inside 3 per cent lower than the ambient mantle, while the compressional velocity is almost normal. The 3-D structure is best illustrated by seismic waveforms recorded by the South Africa Array generated by earthquakes in the western Pacific Ocean. The diffracted S phase travels along the axis of the structure for over 60◦, with the northernand southernmost paths sampling its edges. The S waveforms are simple but delayed by up to 20 s for paths sampling the middle of the structure, whereas they display two arrivals for paths along the boundaries. These complex waveforms can be explained by 3-D multipathing due to rapid lateral variations in shear-wave velocity along the edges of the structure. These sharp features are confirmed by modelling broadband records associated with the proposed ridge structure with two independent methods: the spectral element method and a ray-based 3-D code (DWKM).

3D effects of sharp boundaries at the borders of the African and Pacific Superplumes: Observation and modeling

We report that a sharp lateral boundary exists at the southern edge of the Pacific superplume. The set of SHdiff waveforms, which graze the South Pacific, have similar features to those observed previously at the southeastern edge of the African superplume. Both waveform sets show a rapid shift of the arrival time and the broadening of the waveforms with respect to the azimuth as previously rep...

Seismic anisotropy in eastern Africa, mantle flow, and the African superplume

[1] New estimates of seismic anisotropy from shear wave splitting measurements in eastern Africa reveal a pattern of seismic anisotropy dominated by a NE alignment of fast polarization directions with local changes around the thick Archean lithosphere of the Tanzania craton. The overall pattern is consistent with mantle flow from the African superplume but not with absolute plate motion, a plum...

Metastable superplumes and mantle compressibility

[1] Seismically, the African superplume is known to have a sharp lateral transition in VS and an interface between seismic anomalies with high relief. Such a structure is usually unstable in conventional thermo-chemical convection models. Using a compressible thermo-chemical convection model in which each material has a distinct equation of state, we find an expanded regime of metastable superp...

Effects of Multiple Structure-soil-structure Interactions Considering the Earthquake Waveform and Structures Elevation Effects

The simultaneous effects of soil and existing structures are known as the site-city interaction (structure-soil-structure). The impact of site-city interaction on structure behavior is effective. Thus, this interaction in some regions decreases the responses while increases in other areas. In addition, the site-city interaction of many parameters including the soil type, density rate, height of...
